BRL: Mr. Srivastava, your initiatives like FASTag and the NHAI Data Lake have set benchmarks in e-governance and digital transformation. Could you share your vision behind these projects and discuss the major challenges you encountered during their implementation?

The vision behind FASTag and the NHAI Data Lake was to modernize India’s highways infrastructure and make it more efficient and user-friendly. The goal was to leverage technology to reduce congestion, enhance transparency, and improve the overall user experience for travellers on our highways. 

With FASTag, we aimed to introduce a seamless toll collection system that would minimize human intervention and errors. The NHAI Data Lake was designed to centralize and streamline the vast amount of data generated by our national highways for better decision-making and governance. These two provided 3600 transformations to NHAI (National Highways Authority of India). While FASTag was an outward B2C intervention, the NHAI Data Lake was an in-house digital transformation

The impact of both has been phenomenal. FASTag reduced the average waiting time at toll plazas from 12 minutes to less than 40 seconds, saving a lot of fuel and carbon emissions and enhancing commuters’ efficiency part from a huge jump in toll collection; the NHAI Data Lake reduced the NHAI decision-making time drastically and improved operational efficiency so much that since implementation of NHAI Data lake, NHAI has been creating world records in constructions. As the system is getting mature, the pace of construction is increasing. In FY 2023, they constructed 6655 Km of national highways, the highest ever.

Here are the key challenges I encountered during the implementation process:

Infrastructure Readiness: One of the major challenges was the lack of existing infrastructure to support such a technologically advanced system. Many toll plazas and highways needed significant upgrades to accommodate FASTag readers and data collection systems.

Public Adoption: Convincing the public to adopt a new system posed its own set of challenges. People were accustomed to the traditional cash-based toll collection system, and transitioning to a digital platform required substantial awareness campaigns and incentives.

Data Management: The NHAI Data Lake required complex tasks, including managing and integrating data from numerous sources while ensuring its accuracy and security. The sheer volume of data required robust systems and protocols to manage effectively.

To address these challenges, we adopted a multi-faceted strategy:

Infrastructure Development: We invested heavily in upgrading toll plazas with the necessary technology and infrastructure. This included deploying RFID readers and setting up a robust network for data transmission.

Public Awareness and Incentives: To encourage public adoption, we launched extensive awareness campaigns highlighting the benefits of FASTag, such as reduced wait times and cashless transactions. We also introduced incentives like cashback offers and mandatory FASTag policies for all new vehicles.

Collaborative Approach: We worked closely with banks, digital payment providers, and technology partners to ensure a seamless rollout. This collaborative approach helped us leverage the expertise and resources of multiple stakeholders.

Data Management Systems: For the NHAI Data Lake, we implemented advanced data management systems and protocols. This included using big data analytics, AI, and machine learning to process and analyze data efficiently.

BRL: Based on your experience, what are some key takeaways that would be valuable for leaders undertaking digital transformation initiatives?

Stakeholder Engagement: It is crucial to engage all relevant stakeholders early in the process. This includes not only the technology providers but also the end-users, who need to understand and buy into the new system.

Scalability and Flexibility: Building systems that are scalable and flexible is essential. The ability to adapt to new challenges and scale operations as needed can significantly impact the success of a digital transformation project.

Data Security: Ensuring the security and integrity of data is paramount. Implementing robust security measures and maintaining user transparency about data usage can build trust and protect against potential breaches.

Continuous Improvement: Digital transformation is an ongoing process. Continuously monitoring performance, gathering feedback, and making iterative improvements are necessary to keep the system effective and relevant.

As such, while the journey of implementing FASTag and the NHAI Data Lake was challenging, the lessons learned and the benefits realized have been substantial. BRL: NHAI’s AI Data Lake boosted efficiency and decisions. How can others leverage similar tech for better project management?

Establishing the NHAI Data Lake, which leverages AI and Big Data, has significantly transformed project management at NHAI by enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and strategic decision-making. Here’s how these technologies have made a difference:

Improved Project Efficiency

Data Integration and Accessibility: By consolidating data from various sources into a single platform, the NHAI Data Lake has streamlined access to critical project information. This has eliminated data silos, allowing for more cohesive and timely project management. Project managers can now access real-time data on project status, resources, and potential bottlenecks, enabling faster response times and more efficient project execution.

Predictive Analytics: AI-powered predictive analytics have enabled more accurate forecasting of project timelines and costs. This has helped identify potential delays and cost overruns before they occur, allowing for proactive mitigation strategies. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are a key element in driving technological advancements and enhancing operational efficiencies in various sectors. I have always advocated this, and we have successfully implemented several PPP initiatives that have yielded significant benefits. Here are a few examples:

FASTag Implementation: The FASTag project is a prime example of a successful PPP. This initiative was a collaboration between the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), various banks, and technology providers. The private sector was crucial in providing the RFID technology, managing digital payment platforms, and ensuring the smooth rollout of the system.

This partnership has revolutionized toll collection in Indian highways, reducing wait times at toll plazas, decreasing fuel consumption, and enhancing the overall efficiency of the national highway system. The project has also led to a significant increase in toll revenue collection due to the transparency and efficiency of the system.

NHAI Data Lake: The development of the NHAI Data Lake involved partnerships with highway construction firms, highways operating firms, consultants & engineers, and technology firms specializing in data analytics and cloud computing.

The NHAI Data Lake has transformed project management by providing real-time data insights, predictive analytics, and automated reporting. This has led to more informed decision-making, improved project timelines, and cost savings.

Effective Technologies in Reducing Road Accidents

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): ADAS includes technologies such as Collision Prevention Alerts, Driver Monitoring Systems, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure warnings, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Blind-Spot Detection and Alerting. These systems significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by human error by providing real-time alerts and automatic interventions. In pilot projects, vehicles equipped with ADAS have shown a reduction in accident rates by up to 40%. For instance, automatic emergency braking has been particularly effective in preventing rear-end collisions.

Connected Vehicle Technology (CV2X): CV2X enables vehicles to communicate with each other (V2V) and with infrastructure (V2I), providing real-time data on road conditions, traffic signals, and potential hazards. This technology enhances situational awareness and allows for more informed decision-making by drivers, thereby reducing accidents. Pilot projects are planned to demonstrate impact in cities like Bangalore and Delhi, where CV2X will be used to create Green Corridors for emergency vehicles.

Pilot Projects and Case Studies: Continue to conduct pilot projects in diverse environments to gather data, refine technologies, and demonstrate their effectiveness. Successful pilot projects provide compelling evidence of these technologies’ benefits and can serve as case studies to encourage broader adoption.

Investment in Infrastructure: Invest in the necessary infrastructure to support smart road technologies, including high-speed internet connectivity, sensor networks, and data processing centers. Robust infrastructure is essential for the reliable operation of advanced road safety systems and can significantly enhance their effectiveness.

BRL: Your awards recognize your work in tech and governance. How do they motivate you and fuel your passion for innovation? What guidance can you offer aspiring leaders who want to use technology to make a big difference in their fields and society?

Awards are a powerful validation of my efforts. They show me that my work is impactful and valued by the community and industry. This validation fuels my passion to keep innovating and using technology for the greater good.

Matter Motors raises Rs 82 crore from Japan Airlines & TransLink Innovation Fund, others

Electric motorcycle company Matter Motors secured Rs 82 crore in funding. This investment round included participation from several companies, such as Japan Airlines, TransLink Innovation Fund, and Helena Special Investments Fund. 

To raise the funds, Matter Motors, based in Ahmedabad, issued 110,000 compulsory convertible preference shares (CCPS). These shares were sold for Rs 7,320 each, according to documents filed with the Registrar of Companies.

Los Angeles-based private equity firm Helena Special Investments Fund invested around Rs 41 crore. Japan Airlines, through its venture capital arm Japan Airlines & TransLink Fund, invested Rs 25 crore. Interestingly, Info Edge, which had previously invested in Matter Motors, participated again with an additional Rs 10 crore through its Capital 2B Fund.

Matter Motors had last raised $10 million in June 2022 from Capital 2B and Baring Private Equity Partners, among others.

Back in November last year, they revealed plans to raise a whopping $100-200 million over the next two years. This funding would fuel their expansion plans, including setting up a new factory. Matter Motors launched its first electric motorcycle, the Aera, early last year and is currently taking pre-orders. The Aera comes in two variants, priced at Rs 1.7 lakh and Rs 1.8 lakh, respectively.

Matter Motors faces competition from several players, including TVS-backed Ultraviolette and Bharat Forge-backed Tork Motors. Even electric scooter giant Ola Electric is planning to enter the motorcycle market. Ola Electric showcased four electric motorcycle concepts in August last year, though launch dates haven’t been confirmed yet.

Meanwhile, Ultraviolette, known for its F77 electric motorcycle, is expanding its reach. They’ll be starting deliveries in Europe later this year, targeting markets like Turkey, Spain, and Germany.

India, 26th June 2024 – On the 50th anniversary of the barcode being scanned for the first time, 21 industry champions – including marketplaces such as Alibaba.com, retailers like Carrefour and brand owners like Procter & Gamble, are calling for the global adoption of QR Codes with GS1 standards. Powered by GS1, the leading standards organization behind the barcode, these QR Codes can give access to a wealth of product information easily accessible via smartphones – which is expected to revolutionize the consumer experience completely.

Since the first scan in 1974, the collaboration between retailers and manufacturers through GS1 has led to the widespread adoption of the original barcode. Today, this technology is the trusted universal method for product identification, with over 1 billion items carrying barcodes that are scanned more than 10 billion times daily, enhancing supply chain efficiencies worldwide. Companies will need to evaluate their internal technology and processes to make the most of QR Codes with GS1 standards. Adding more detailed product information to QR Codes can be done gradually, allowing businesses to plan changes at their own pace.

The companies that have joined forces with GS1 are a combination of leading brand owners, retailers and marketplaces that have a combined market value of over USD 1.4 trillion. These companies operate in over 150 countries and reach billions of consumers worldwide – paving the way for the project’s success. 

The goal of this collaboration is that by the end of 2027, QR Codes with GS1 standards should be widely adopted. To achieve this, a coordinated effort is necessary between manufacturers and retailers: manufacturers should start implementing QR Codes with GS1 standards on product packages, while retailers should ensure their point of sale (POS) scanners are equipped to read the new barcodes. 

“We expect that the transition to QR Codes with GS1 standards will happen gradually around the world, but one thing is certain: those that accelerate through this transformation the fastest will be best positioned to unlock valuable new capabilities and provide more benefits to their customers, shoppers, and consumers,” said Mark Batenic, Chairman, Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA) and Chairman of the GS1 Management Board.

The shift has already begun, with the new technology being tested in 48 countries across the world, representing 88% of the world’s GDP.

AI startup EvolutionaryScale raises $142M to advance tech in biology

EvolutionaryScale, a company developing artificial intelligence for biology, announced a massive $142 million seed funding round on Tuesday. The round was led by a team including Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, and Lux Capital.

Big names in the tech world also joined in, with both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and NVIDIA’s venture capital arm contributing to the funding.

Highlighting the potential breakthrough, Josh Wolfe, co-founder and managing partner at Lux Capital, compared EvolutionaryScale’s achievement to a “ChatGPT moment for biology.” He explained that the company has built the first-ever large language model designed specifically for creating new proteins and other biological systems.

EvolutionaryScale has ambitious plans for its AI, according to the company’s chief scientist, Alex Rives. He told Reuters they envision a future where this AI can be used for many purposes. These applications include speeding up the discovery of new drugs and even engineering microbes that can break down plastic pollution in our environment.

The field of using AI to design new biological systems is exploding with potential. This is evident by the recent partnership between Microsoft-backed OpenAI and French drugmaker Sanofi. Announced in May, this collaboration aims to leverage AI to accelerate Sanofi’s drug development process. EvolutionaryScale’s funding round further highlights the excitement surrounding this innovative approach.

While the potential of AI for biology is undeniable, there are also concerns. Experts have warned about the possibility of generative AI being misused to create bioweapons. This could involve the AI assisting in the development of dangerous pathogens or toxins.

To focus on future advancements, EvolutionaryScale plans to invest its funding to train even more powerful AI models in the next generation and to build a strong team to collaborate with the biotech industry, according to Alex Rives. This partnership will be crucial for putting their AI to practical use.

The company is releasing a series of models called ESM3. There’s a smaller version available for free to researchers (non-commercial use only). Additionally, AWS and NVIDIA are teaming up to make the models, including the most powerful one, commercially available. This means businesses can access this technology to drive innovation.

In a groundbreaking feat, EvolutionaryScale used its ESM3 model to design a completely new fluorescent protein. This is significant because, according to the company, it would have taken nature a staggering 500 million years to evolve something similar. Sid’s Farm secures $10mn in funding led by Omnivore

Sid’s Farm, a company that delivers dairy products directly to customers, secured $10 million (about Rs 83 Crores) in funding. The investment round was led by Omnivore, a venture capital firm based in Mumbai, and the family office of Narotam Sekhsaria, the founder of Ambuja Cements. 

Sid’s Farm plans to use the investment to boost its presence in Hyderabad and Bengaluru and to expand its manufacturing facilities to meet the growing demand. The company, based in Hyderabad, currently serves more than 25,000 customers across these two cities.

“Premium dairy brands and products over D2C platforms are expected to lead (the) growth (in the overall Indian dairy space). We see Sid’s Farm emerging as a key player in this space with its commitment to antibiotic-free, hormone-free, preservative-free milk and milk products,” said Reihem Roy, partner at Omnivore. 

Omnivore, a venture capital firm known for its focus on agricultural technology (agritech), has a history of backing innovative companies in the space. The firm have invested in Dehaat, an online marketplace that connects farmers directly, and Pixxel, a company that uses satellite imaging for agricultural purposes.

Sid’s Farm, launched in 2016 by Kishore Indukuri, had previously raised $1 million from their customers and their referrals in January of last year. This direct-to-consumer company offers a variety of dairy products, including whole milk, double-toned milk, ghee, butter, and paneer.

“This investment will be instrumental in accelerating our growth trajectory and enabling us to provide fresh, healthy, and responsibly sourced food to a wider audience in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. We strongly believe that there is an opportunity to serve over 100,000 families every day in these two markets alone,” said Indukuri.

B2B fashion platform Zyod raises $18M in funding

B2B fashion marketplace Zyod secures $18 million in funding boost. This investment round combines equity funding led by venture firm RTP Global with debt financing from Stride Ventures, Trifecta Capital, and Alteria Capital. Notably, the majority of the funding comes from equity investors, demonstrating strong confidence in Zyod’s future. Existing investor Lightspeed Venture Partners also participated in the round, further solidifying their support for the company.

Zyod has plans to use the raised funds to significantly grow its customer base. By the end of the fiscal year, they want to be operating in over 40 countries, more than double their current reach of 18. This expansion will include both entirely new markets and deeper penetration into existing ones, with a focus on areas like the US, UK, Middle East Asia, and Japan. Jaipuria also mentioned using the funds to broaden the product categories they offer and improve their technology. These tech advancements will allow them to better forecast supply chain issues, production shortfalls, and even design trends.

“Zyod leverages tech to refine every facet of the production process, right from a modular design approach to optimising operations at the factory level. We are excited to support Zyod as they expand their transformative platform internationally,” Nishit Garg, partner at RTP Global’s Asia investment team said. 

A relatively new player, Zyod, began operations in January of last year. The company, co-founded by Jaipuria and Ritesh Khandelwal, has grown quickly to a team of around 100 employees. These employees come from various backgrounds including design, engineering, supply chain management, and sales. To fuel its international expansion plans, Zyod is actively seeking to add to its sales teams in overseas markets.

Zyod collaborates with fashion brands from sketch to shelf. This teamwork starts with Zyod and the brand’s design teams brainstorming together to create fresh clothing concepts.

“One of the biggest challenges in fast fashion is inventory wastage as you have new releases every few months… we also help manage the supply side so brands can purchase smaller batches of inventory more efficiently,” Jaipuria said.  

The startup is bringing in a healthy annual revenue in the double-digit millions, and they aim to triple that by fiscal year 2025. Zyod projects that most of its business, around 80%, will come from international markets in the coming years. The company expects to focus on large enterprise clients for the first three years, but they eventually see more business coming from smaller clients.

Zyod supplies products to a variety of apparel brands, including Landmark Group, NEXT, Rare Rabbit, FirstCry and Allen Cooper, among others. In April last year, the firm had raised $3.5 million in a funding round led by Lightspeed Venture.
