Apple renews talks with OpenAI for iPhone generative AI features: report

Apple Inc is in renewed discussions with OpenAI to utilize the startup’s generative AI technology for new features in the upcoming iPhone, Bloomberg News reported on Friday.

The companies have started discussing the terms of a potential agreement and how OpenAI features would be integrated into Apple’s next iPhone operating system, iOS 18, according to sources cited by the report.

Neither Apple nor OpenAI immediately responded to Reuters requests for comment.

Last month, Bloomberg reported that Apple was in talks to license Google’s Gemini chatbot for new iPhone features.

Apple has not yet decided on its partners and may reach an agreement with both OpenAI and Google, or choose another provider altogether, the report added.

While rivals like Microsoft and Google have been incorporating generative AI into their products, Apple has been slower in doing so.

In February, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that the company was investing “significantly” in generative AI and would unveil more about its plans to use the technology later this year.
