KKR to acquire minority stake in BookMyShow for growth

Investment firm KKR has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a minority stake in BookMyShow, with the company planning to use the investment to support its next phase of growth as it expands its live entertainment business and strengthens its full-stack offerings across India.

BookMyShow, launched in 2007, is owned and operated by Bigtree Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., which was founded in 1999. The company has established itself as one of India’s leading entertainment platforms, offering a range of entertainment experiences and operating across global markets.

The platform currently reaches more than 700 towns and cities across India and works with partners across the entertainment industry.

KKR said its investment reflects its confidence in India’s growing entertainment sector and BookMyShow’s ability to capitalize on the country’s expanding demand for live experiences. The firm pointed to rising discretionary spending, India’s large and young consumer base, and increasing demand for world-class live entertainment as key growth drivers.

“With expansive consumer reach, technology, and entertainment capabilities, the company is positioned to continue its growth in a fast-maturing market,” the company said in the joint release.

The investment will add BookMyShow to KKR’s global media and entertainment portfolio, which includes ByteDance, Chord Music Partners, Epic Games, PlayOnSports, OverDrive, Superstruct, and Simon & Schuster.

Ashish Hemrajani, Founder and CEO of BookMyShow, said the company was pleased to welcome KKR as an investor and highlighted the investment firm’s global perspective, expertise, and understanding of consumer businesses.

“We are delighted to welcome KKR as an investor in BookMyShow. Their global perspective, deep expertise, and strong understanding of consumer businesses will be invaluable as we enter the next phase of our journey,” Hemrajani said.

He added that the timing of the investment was particularly significant as BookMyShow has expanded its presence across the live entertainment landscape and identified growing opportunities within India’s entertainment economy.

Hemrajani also acknowledged the continued support of BookMyShow’s longstanding investors, including Network18, part of Reliance Industries Limited, Accel Partners, Elevation Capital, Stripes Group, and TPG.

Avendus Capital served as BookMyShow’s exclusive financial advisor on the transaction, while Trilegal acted as its legal advisor.

KKR said it expects to combine its global investment experience and network with its local knowledge to support BookMyShow’s next stage of transformation and help the company further enhance the entertainment experiences it delivers to audiences across India.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals.

The KKR investment is set to support BookMyShow’s expansion in India’s rapidly growing live entertainment market, strengthening its capabilities and positioning the company for its next phase of growth.
