Bostik Showcases New Adhesives Range at The India Battery Show 2023

Bostik, a leading global adhesive specialist will showcase its new Thermal Conductive Adhesives (TCA) range at the India Battery Show 2023 between October 4 and 6. The new range of TCA was a result of a collaboration between Bostik and Polytec PT, to address the challenge of thermal management in the latest Cell-to-Pack (CTP) battery design for e-mobility solutions.

Guillaume Desurmont Senior Vice President at Bostik, says the launch of the new TCA is the first outcome of a fruitful collaboration between Bostik and Polytec PT. “With Polytec PT’s expertise in thermal conductive materials and Bostik’s expertise in structural polyurethane adhesives, we strengthen our offer with innovative Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) solutions to our customers in the Electric Vehicle (EV) battery market.”

As one of the world’s largest automobile markets, India’s move towards electrification is a positive path towards sustainable mobility. Such a monumental move impacts not only the EV market but also the components associated with it – the battery that powers the vehicle and the adhesives that hold it all together.

There is distinct correlation between increasing calls for lightweight and safety materials in the automotive sector and the innovation of electric vehicle adhesives.”

The battery is a core component of an EV. While it is an essential component for the vehicle to function well, battery safety has utmost importance for the safety and protection of the passengers. TCAs provide the optimal solution – they not just bond the components together but are able to dissipate heat as well as absorb shock and vibration during the drive thus preventing damage to the sensitive components.

As EV technology progresses, the requirement for more reliable and effective adhesives to protect their batteries increases. Such capabilities contribute a crucial role to India’s environment and economy considering how approximately one fifth of the country’s total energy use is attributed to its transportation sector.

“Our efforts to research and develop TCAs are more vigorous than ever. Effective thermal management in EVs ensures the reliability and robustness of EVs and enhances the performance of the vehicles,” Prasanna elaborates.

Thermal management is vital to ensuring the operating temperature of EV-Battery systems remains between 20C and 40C for optimum battery life and performance. TIMs such as TCAs are essential to battery design to ensure a robust thermal connection between the battery/cell environment and the cooling elements. With the trend towards fast charging for e-mobility, the importance of thermal management – and TIMs – is increasing significantly.

The result of Bostik’s cognizance of the need for an efficacious adhesive for their manufacturing partners is the new XPU TCA 202, a two-component, polyurethane-based adhesive specifically designed for heat dissipation in battery pack assemblies. It perfectly tackles the challenge to balance thermal conductivity with high mechanical strength while maintaining good levels of flexibility thanks to high elongation.

Its low-monomer content allows it to meet most stringent regulations and enables easy product handling without specific training.

At a practical level it is also fast and easy to process through automatic mixing, dosing and dispensing equipment. It adheres well to most substrates without using a primer, and cures at room temperature.

The launch follows the recent announcement on June 1, 2023 of the planned acquisition of Polytec PT by Arkema.

Aon to Acquire Global Insurance Brokers to Enhance Risk Capital Offering for Clients in India

Burma Burma to invest INR 40-Cr to double its presence

Burma Burma, a Burmese restaurant, intends to increase its total number of outlets to 20 by December 2025. Ankit Gupta, the founder of Burma Burma, stated that the brand is set to invest INR 40 crore to support this expansion. Currently, the restaurant chain runs 10 outlets and operates one delivery kitchen across 8 cities.

“We will be opening one outlet each in Mumbai and Bengaluru by February and April, respectively. By December 2024, we will have 14 operational outlets, and by December 2025, we will add 6 more,” he elaborated.

Each outlet of the Burmese restaurant, on average, covers an area of 2,500 sq. ft, and the capital expenditure (CAPEX) required to launch one outlet amounts to INR 3.5 crore.

“We will be opening our new outlets in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, and to aid the expansion plans, we are planning to raise approximately USD5 million in our seed round,” he said.

Notably, the brand was bootstrapped for the initial 8 years. However, in 2022, it successfully secured a pre-seed funding round of over USD 2 million, with Negen Capital taking the lead in investments. Additionally, the funding round witnessed the participation of Bbigplas Poly Private Ltd and other investors. 

“We are looking to raise anywhere between 3.5 times our turnover. In the pre-seed round, we diluted roughly around 12 percent of our equity, and in this round, we are looking to dilute a further 12-13 percent. We will be wrapping up this round by early next year,” he added.

Additionally, the restaurant chain intends to expand its presence in the modern trade sector through a collaboration with Nature’s Basket with Burma Burma Pantry.

“Currently, Burma Burma Pantry, which is a retail unit of the brand, offers 25 SKUs, including chips, unique pastes, teas, t-shirts, cups, tea-pots, etc. We offer 12 SKUs under the food category, and the rest 13 SKUs come under the non-food category,” he said.  

The brand’s products, currently offered at the restaurant, account for 1.5 percent of the brand’s overall business.

Furthermore, the brand’s food delivery service has experienced a significant increase in demand. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it used to constitute 5-6 percent of the total business. Today, it represents 19-20 percent of the total business.

“At present, our average order value online is INR 750, and in restaurants, it is INR 1,000,” he stated.  

The brand, which typically achieves a return on investment (ROI) within 18-24 months, closed the previous fiscal year with INR 56 crore in revenue. For the current fiscal year, it aims to reach INR 75 crore in revenue.

Saadhya Trust for Social Development Wins 7th NS Hema Memorial Award for ‘Outstanding NGO’ in the Disability Sector

Saadhya Trust for Social Development has won the first place in the 7th NS Hema Memorial Award 2023 for ‘Outstanding NGO’ in the disability sector in Karnataka, in a ceremony held on Wednesday, October 4th. Jayam Trust and Mobility In Dystrophy MIND Trust were awarded second and third place respectively.

Established by The Association of People with Disability (APD), the NS Hema Memorial Awards recognize the relentless efforts of NGOs contributing significantly to the disability sector in Karnataka. The awards are an annual tradition, paying homage to the visionary founder of APD, NS Hema, on her birth anniversary.

A distinguished panel of jurors, comprising individuals from the disability and social impact sectors, evaluated the applications before selecting the winners. The award ceremony took place at the India Campus Crusade for Christ in Bengaluru. Other NGOs nominated this year included the Ishanya India Foundation and Akkara Foundation.

While the first prize includes a citation, a trophy, and a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, the second prize comprises a citation, a trophy, and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/-, and the third prize includes a citation, a trophy, and a cash prize of Rs. 25,000/-.

Reflecting on their win, Mrs Arathi K.T, Founder and Managing trustee of Saadhya Trust for Social Development expressed, “We consider ourselves incredibly lucky to receive this prestigious award after seven years of dedicated work toward promoting inclusion. Srinivas Garudachar, a family member of NS Hema, graced the event as the Guest of Honour, while Jayanthi Yeshwanth, Chairperson of the NS Hema Memorial Award Jury Committee delivered the keynote address.

Zolostays co-founder Akhil Sikri leaves to venture into fintech

Akhil Sikri, one of the co-founders of Zolostays, left the company to start a new business in the fintech sector. He resigned from his position on March 31, 2023. 

Akhil has updated his LinkedIn profile, where he now identifies himself as a co-founder of a yet-to-be-announced venture. Zolostays has informed its investors about this development, as stated by the Bengaluru-based company.

Zolostays is a platform for co-living and student housing, offering a variety of accommodation options, such as paying guests (PGs), serviced apartments, and independent flats. The company provides a user-friendly mobile app and employs artificial intelligence (AI) to personalize the experience for its users.

Between 2021 and 2022, the company experienced a slight uptick of less than 1% in its operational revenue, reaching Rs 44.8 crore. Nonetheless, Zolostays was able to reduce its losses by almost 25% in FY22, lowering them to Rs 67.5 crore from Rs 89.9 crore in the previous year, mainly through cost-cutting measures.

“Our revenue has seen notable growth due to several factors. First, our occupancy rates have risen, indicating increased demand for our services. Additionally, we’ve gained greater pricing flexibility as customers are willing to pay for our premium accommodation with excellent facilities. Lastly, our focus on securing prime locations with proximity to various multinational corporations has contributed to the success of our premium properties,” the company added.

Established in 2015, Zolostays has secured a total of $98 million in funding and is currently working on securing Series-D funding. The company achieved profitability in April 2023 and was backed by Nexus Venture Partners and Investcorp. Zolostays has set a revenue target of Rs 500 crore by FY24.

Furthermore, Zolostays has expressed its plans to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) within the next 18 to 24 months.

“Zolostays is currently undergoing a strategic shift towards positioning itself as a premium accommodation provider in order to bolster its revenue,” the company said. It plans to extend its student housing and hotel businesses to Dubai, Indonesia, and Thailand. It is aiming to finalize this expansion by March 2024.
