Insurtech startup BimaKavach receives IRDAI licence for corporate insurance

BimaKavach, an insurtech startup, announced that it obtained a direct insurance broking license from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). This license allows the platform to expand its insurance offerings for businesses.

BimaKavach specializes in selling corporate insurance products, primarily focusing on small and medium enterprises. They offer a portfolio of 18 insurance products, covering liability, assets, engineering, marine, and group health insurance.

In a statement, the Indore-based startup expressed its goal of achieving Rs 100 crore in gross written premiums (GWPs) by the fiscal year 2024-2025.

“By securing this direct business insurance licence, we aim to collect Rs 100 crore in GWP by FY 2024-25 from small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as it will focus on reducing difficulties for first-time buyers and providing tech solutions for larger enterprises to help manage insurance policies better,” Tejas Jain, the founder of BimaKavach, said in the statement.

“This launch has been a three-year journey working with top insurance and reinsurance companies to create industry-specific products. We intend to remove misselling so each business can get the right coverage at the right price,” Jain added. 

This development coincides with when insurtech startups in India attract prominent investors, reinforcing investor confidence due to the sector’s strong growth. For example, the Delhi NCR-based insurtech startup InsuranceDekho recently secured $60 million in funding, with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group leading the round and participation from BNP Paribas Cardif and others.

In addition, another insurtech startup, Onsurity, raised $24 million just last week in a funding round, with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) taking the lead.

Notably, BimaKavach secured $2 million in a seed round last year, with WaterBridge Ventures as the lead investor. The company has revealed plans for another fundraising effort in 2024.

Artificial heart maker Carmat raises $7.4 million in funding

Carmat, a company that makes artificial hearts and has faced financial challenges, announced on Monday that it successfully raised €7 million ($7.4 million) in capital. Many of its historical financial shareholders backed this capital-raising initiative.

Even though Carmat has received this investment, it estimates needing an additional €50 million ($52.6 million) to cover its expenses and investments until October 2024. The company’s shareholders include the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

Airbus, which was previously the largest shareholder in Carmat, did not participate in this recent capital raising. As a result, its ownership stake in Carmat has dropped from 11.7% to 10.8%, making it the second-largest investor according to Carmat.

Carmat expects to see growth in its sales within Europe. It aims for revenues ranging from €4 million to €6 million in the latter half of 2023, with a significant surge in sales expected in 2024.

IDH and Better Cotton organised ‘Agriclimate Nexus: Food, Fibre and Regeneration for Sustainable Growth in India’

Multi-stakeholder gathering including representatives from farming communities, private sector, government, civil society and government discussed regenerative agriculture benefits and opportunities

IDH and Better Cotton, the world’s largest cotton sustainability initiative, brought together thought leaders, actors and innovators to build consensus on the scope and merits of regenerative agriculture, as well as to identify opportunities for action across policy, business, finance, and research. The event was hosted in New Delhi today to promote regenerative agriculture in India through collaboration, innovation, and creating an enabling environment.

Agriculture in India holds a pivotal role in the countrys economy and society, involving over 46% of the population, with 86% being smallholder farmers. The sector faces critical challenges like environmental degradation, soil depletion, and water scarcity, all endangering its long-term sustainability. As Indias population continues to grow, ensuring crop and food security and livelihoods for millions is paramount. Regenerative agriculture offers a sustainable solution by rejuvenating soil health, preserving water resources, and promoting biodiversity, while also enhancing productivity and resilience to climate change.

The event provided a platform for participants from farming communities, private sector, civil society and government to collaborate, share insights, and drive meaningful progress towards a sustainable and regenerative agricultural future that would protect the environment and improve the livelihoods of millions of small farming communities involved in the production of food and fiber crops in India.

Discussions reiterated the importance of regenerative agriculture to address issues of climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil, preventing soil degradation & water scarcity, and the loss of biodiversity, thereby enhancing food security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and restoring ecosystems.

The event enabled participants to share the barriers faced and hear about solutions, including the adoption of the Better Cotton Principles and Criteria as well as the importance of promoting a ‘Landscape’ approach that supports change within a geographic jurisdiction in collaboration with all the stakeholders in that region. Participants agreed to continue sharing their learning, tools, and approaches even after the event to keep the conversation going and accelerate the transition to regenerative agriculture.

CanAm’s 51st Project Repayment: $22.5 Million from a Mixed-Use Apartment Development Project at New Jersey City University

CanAm Enterprises (“CanAm”) is delighted to announce the full repayment of its 51st EB-5 project, which is a two-building housing complex on the West Campus of New Jersey City University (“NJCU”). This repayment is the 51st in CanAm’s history and brings CanAm’s total EB-5 capital repayments to $2.26 billion.

Funded, in part, by a $22.5 million CanAm EB-5 loan, the mixed-use project consists of two residential buildings – Cityline West on University Place and Cityline East on Carbon Place – and approximately 10,000 square feet of space for retail, together with two structured parking facilities. Approved by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (“NJEDA”), the project was completed in conjunction with a larger redevelopment plan for NJCU known as University Place – a public-private transformative revitalization and expansion of NJCU’s West Campus into an urban village. Both EB-5-funded buildings have maintained robust occupancy since the commencement of leasing at Cityline West in late 2019.

First established in 1927, NJCU serves nearly 8,000 students in 47 undergraduate and 30 graduate programs in wide-ranging fields including education, business, the fine and performing arts, the sciences, health, and the humanities. The EB-5 project helps the University address the demand for quality housing, has exceeded its original goal of creating 256 U.S. jobs, and has met all USCIS requirements for processing investors’ applications for permanent U.S. residency (I-829 forms.)
