Rae by Tamara opens in Guruvayoor, targets India’s pilgrim market

Tamara Leisure Experiences has launched Rae by Tamara, positioning it as India’s first faith-intelligent hospitality brand, with the inauguration of its debut hotel in Guruvayoor. The launch marks the company’s entry into a specialised hospitality segment designed around the needs, routines, and expectations of modern pilgrims.

The property was inaugurated by Mr. A.V. Gopinath, Chairman Guruvayur Devaswom Board, Mr. Samir MC, CEO, Tamara Leisure Experiences, Mr. Manoj Mathew, Sr. VP Operations, Tamara Leisure Experiences and Mr. Renjith R, GM, Rae by Tamara, Guruvayoor.

Commenting on the occasion, Samir MC, CEO, Tamara Leisure Experiences, said, “Inaugurating the first Rae by Tamara in the auspicious month of Chingam, which marks the Malayalam New Year, makes this milestone especially meaningful for us, as the occasion symbolises new beginnings, hope, and prosperity. Kerala is home to some of India’s most significant pilgrimage destinations, from Guruvayoor, Pathanamthitta, and Thiruvananthapuram to several other sacred centres that draw millions of travellers every year. We could not have chosen a more fitting destination than Guruvayoor, which has welcomed generations of devotees with unwavering faith and devotion. Through Rae, our endeavour is to create hospitality experiences that thoughtfully support these journeys while celebrating the local traditions, culture, and communities that make each destination unique.”

Rae by Tamara enters the market as India’s faith tourism economy moves into a new phase, with faith tourism accounting for over 60% of domestic travel. The brand is built on the belief that pilgrimage increasingly depends not only on the destination but also on the quality and relevance of the experience surrounding the journey.

The brand selected Guruvayoor as its starting point because of the destination’s strong religious significance and established visitor base. Home to the revered Sree Krishna Temple, one of India’s busiest pilgrimage centres, the town welcomes nearly seven million devotees every year and hosts an average of 200 temple weddings on auspicious occasions. The destination consequently attracts multigenerational families, NRIs, and international visitors.

The Guruvayoor hotel previously operated under the Lilac Hotels portfolio and has now been reimagined as the first Rae by Tamara property. The transition represents a new hospitality philosophy rather than simply a change of brand identity.

Rae is designed around the understanding that pilgrims have different needs depending on their age, purpose, and manner of experiencing a sacred destination. Its target guests include families introducing children to religious traditions, elderly pilgrims seeking comfort and accessibility, solo spiritual travellers, groups and guests attending temple weddings and religious celebrations.

The brand’s faith-intelligent model extends beyond conventional hotel services to account for rituals, travel rhythms, cultural context, and practical requirements. Its offerings include shrine-aligned service design, faith-conscious dining, personalised pre-arrival guidance, locally rooted ‘Mitra’ companions, and curated cultural experiences within the hotel.

The objective is to make the hotel an extension of the spiritual journey rather than simply a place to stay near a religious destination.

“As we build the Rae portfolio, we are actively exploring opportunities across India’s key pilgrimage destinations, alongside upcoming destinations including Kumbakonam, Velankanni, Tirupati, Palani, and Tiruvannamalai. Our vision is to create a network of hotels that thoughtfully serve faith travellers while reflecting the distinct cultural identity of each destination,” added Samir MC, CEO, Tamara Leisure Experiences.

The company plans to build a network of over 25 Rae by Tamara properties by 2030. The expansion will focus on India’s pilgrimage circuit while allowing individual hotels to reflect the cultural identity and character of their respective destinations.

The launch also reflects a broader shift within India’s hospitality industry as religious travel increasingly intersects with experiential tourism. By creating a dedicated brand around pilgrimage-led travel, Tamara is seeking to address the specific requirements of a large and diverse traveller base rather than adapting conventional hotel formats to religious destinations.

Founded by entrepreneur Shruti Shibulal, Tamara Leisure Experiences (TLE) operates as a multi-brand hospitality group built around its “Responsible and Memorable Hospitality” philosophy. The group combines Profit, People, and Planet through its ‘touch-the-earth-lightly’ architectural approach, with a focus on environmental responsibility and community empowerment.

The company’s portfolio began with Tamara Coorg, a resort set within an organic coffee plantation, and has since expanded into a portfolio exceeding 1,000 keys. Its brands include Tamara Resorts, O by Tamara, Lilac Hotels, and Amal Tamara.

Tamara Resorts focuses on immersive luxury nature retreats, while O by Tamara caters to business and leisure travellers. Lilac Hotels offers urban stays, and Amal Tamara provides holistic, clinical-grade Ayurvedic wellness. The company is also among the hospitality groups in India holding Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification.

With Rae by Tamara, the company is extending its responsible hospitality approach into the faith tourism segment. Its planned expansion across Kumbakonam, Velankanni, Tirupati, Palani, and Tiruvannamalai will create a broader network aimed at serving pilgrims while retaining the cultural distinctiveness of each destination.

The launch of Rae by Tamara in Guruvayoor marks a strategic move into a specialised and expanding segment of India’s hospitality market. With plans to build more than 25 properties by 2030, Tamara Leisure Experiences aims to establish Rae as a dedicated hospitality network for faith travellers while combining destination-specific experiences with contemporary guest services.
